Currently based in Amsterdam, the heterogeny of African-American/German artist Olivia Brown’s heritage and New Orlean upbringing has proven to be both an implicit and explicit source of inspiration to her illustrative work. Her work is often both as satirical as it is introspective, taking a decidedly feminist approach to such thematics as intra/interpersonal relations and mental health, thus making it as relatable as is it is highly personal. Working largely in pen, ink and watercolour, her practice marries the illustrative cannon with a fascination with the human body that is partly attributable to her attraction to visually stunning structures observable in organic matter, informed by her study of Biomedicine.
